Fujitsu recently announced the launch of a new generation of supercomputer CPU, A64FX, which uses the Arm architecture and will be manufactured in a 7-nanometer process; the CPU will be used on a new generation of supercomputers in Japan, called Post-K, to enhance the computing and simulation capabilities of supercomputers and meet the needs of large data and AI applications.
Currently, Japan's current supercomputer "K Computer" is jointly developed by Fujitsu and the Institute of Physics and Chemistry of Japan (RIKEN), but it uses a SPARC 64 architecture processor. However, the next generation of supercomputers will use the newly developed processor A64FX, which will transform the core of the product into an Arm architecture and will be the first to use a Scalable Vector Extension (SVE) instruction set to support 512 bit floating-point units, greatly enhancing floating-point performance.
Fujitsu said it was working with RIKEN to develop the next generation of supercomputers Post-K, hoping to start operating around 2021, and the new A64FX will be mainly used in Japan's next generation of supercomputers in the future.
It is reported that the instruction set used by A64FX is Arm's extended instruction set Armv8.2-A SVE architecture for supercomputing, which is the first time that this instruction set has been used in a practical product to support 512-bit wide floating-point operations; and the product integrates 48 operation cores, plus four assistance cores, equipped with 32GB HBM 2 memory, bandwidth up to 1T. B/s.
In addition, A64FX uses the Tofu interface technology developed by Fujitsu alone. Tofu has 2 pipelines (Lane) and 10 ports with a bandwidth of 28Gbps. A single A64FP has a dual-precision floating-point performance of more than 2.7 TFLOPS, while a single-precision of at least 5.4 TFLOPS, half-precision up to 10.8 TFLOPS, while enhancing 16 bit and 8 bit integer performance.
Fujitsu pointed out that the new A64FX and the developing supercomputer Post-K, which can be used in scientific simulation and current popular AI and data analysis fields, will be expected to make contributions in cutting-edge research, health care, disaster prevention and mitigation, energy and other computing simulation fields; at the same time, through the application of large data and AI, industry competition can be enhanced.
